Founded in 1958, under the supervision of the National Health Commission of People’s Republic of China (NHC), Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH) is a modernized and comprehensive upper first-class hospital with integration of medical services, education, scientific research, disease prevention, rehabilitation and health care. At present, the number of employed workers has increased to 5883. In 2019, the average number of clinical beds has reached 2,024 and 2057 of them are available at the end of December 2019. The hospital has 37 clinical departments and 10 medical detection departments. There are 34 doctoral degree programs and 1 clinical postdoctoral programme. There are also 70 doctoral supervisors, 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Science, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 grant recipient of The Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 4 winners of Distinguished Youth Fund of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 chief scientist of “973” Program by the Ministry of Science, 2 distinguished professors of “Cheung Kong Scholar” by the Ministry of Education, 2 selected candidates of National New Century Talents Project, 2 candidates of the Program for Millions of Leading Engineering Talents, 1 candidate of Thousand Talent Program for Young Outstanding Scientists, 4 winners of Excellent Youth Fund of National Natural Science Foundation and 10 outstanding experts with great contribution honored by NHC (National Health Commission).

PUTH has the greatest Spinal Surgery department among hospitals in China. The Reproductive Medicine Center, where the first In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) baby in mainland China was born, has the most comprehensive treatment methods, and is one of the largest reproductive centers around the world. The Sports Medicine Institute, appointed as the exclusive injury prevention and treatment center for athletes by Chinese Olympic Committee, is the earliest sports medicine institute in People’s Republic of China. Ophthalmology department is also at the domestic leading level in the treatment of glaucoma, cataract, eye trauma and corneal transplantation. Gastroenterology department has done an excellent performance in study on the pathogenesis and treatment of Peotic ulcer diseases as well as the treatment of early gastric cancer. Cardiovascular department has attained outstanding achievements in percutaneous intervention, rehabilitation of heart disease patients and the balance between cardiovascular clinical and basic development. Plastic surgery department and occupational medicine department are clinical characteristic subjects, which are the first to be established in China.

With the great efforts of several generations, PUTH has become one of the domestic upper first-class hospitals. There are 20 national key clinical specialties: orthopedics department, pharmacy department (clinical pharmacy), pathology department, nursing department, laboratory medicine department, gastroenterology department, gynecology department, obstetrics department, occupational disease department, the E.N.T department, key laboratory of cardiovascular molecular biology and regulation of titanium, respiratory department, neurology department, general surgery department, urology department, ophthalmology department, anesthesiology department, rehabilitation department, plastic surgery department, and sports medicine institute. Gynecology and Obstetrics is the national medical center for Clinical research. Obstetrics department and rehabilitation department are also the national centers for medical quality management and control.

For more than ten years, the number of outpatients and emergency visits of PUTH has always been in the forefront in Beijing. In 2019, the hospital served more than 4.22 million outpatients and over 30,0000 emergency patients. The hospital had nearly 14,0000 patients discharged, and about 76000 operations performed. The average length of stay has reached to 4.96 days per person. In the comprehensive evaluation of Beijing DRGs (disease diagnosis-related group), the main management indexes of PUTH have reached the advanced level. One third of the discharged patients in PUTH come from all over the country.

PUTH has 20 professional bases for standardized training of residents in Beijing, 3 bases for standardized training of specialists of National Health Commission, and 2 skills assessment centers of standardized training of residents in Beijing. As a non-state-owned and non-profit general hospital affiliated to Peking University, PUTH has nearly 800 students, over 500 postgraduate and doctoral graduate students. Meanwhile, it annually undertakes the standardized training task for more than 1500 further-study doctors and nearly 400 resident doctors in Beijing. There are 100 national and local continuing medical education projects every year.

PUTH has 3 Innovation Teams of the Ministry of Education (Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Gynecology& Obstetrics), 1 National Clinical Research Center (Gynecology and Obstetrics), 1 Key Lab (Reproductive Medicine) granted by the Ministry of Education, 1 Key Lab (Cardiovascular molecular biology and regulatory peptides) of National Health Commission, 8 Key Labs (magnetic resonance imaging equipment and technology, spinal disease research, reproductive endocrinology and assisted reproductive technology, cardiovascular receptor research, sports medicine joint injury, helicobacter pylori infection and upper gastrointestinal diseases, reconstruction protection and rehabilitation of ocular nerve injury, biomarker research and clinical use of biomarker for neurodegenerative disorders) supported by Beijing, 3 International Science and Technology Cooperation bases in Beijing (Prevention of Birth Defect, Clinical and Basic Research of Coronary Heart Diseases, Biomimetic titanium Orthopedic Implants).

By the end of 2019, 146 personnel from 34 departments of PUTH served as the vice chairman or above of the second level branch of the main series of academic groups such as the Chinese Medical Association, and 44 personnel from 17 departments hold posts of chief editor or associate chief editor in Chinese science journals.

The Innovation Research Team of PUTH won the second National Innovation Award. Professor Li Rong’s “Strategies Research on Safety and Effectiveness Improvement of Assisted Reproductive Technology” won the Second Prize of Higher Education Institutions Research Achievement Award in Science and Technology Progress.Professor Fan Dongsheng’s"Molecular Epidemiology and Pathogenesis of ALS in China" together with Professor Ao Yingfang's "Basic research on the analysis and remodeling of the microenvironment for cartilage tissue repair and regeneration" won the Second Prize of Higher Education Institutions Research Achievement Award in Natural Science. Professor Ao Yingfang's “Basic and Clinical Research on ACL injury” won the Second Prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award. Professor Jiang Hui’s “The establishment of a new system for diagnosis and treatment of azoospermia, Technology Innovation Demonstration, Promotion and Application”won the Third Prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award.Researcher Yan Liying won the 22nd Mao Yisheng Beijing Youth Science and Technology Award.

PUTH has been awarded several honors including the National Civilized Unit, National Advanced Unit of Health Care and Cultural Construction, Nationwide Collective Honorary Title of Medical And Health Industry, National Demonstration Unit of TCM in General Hospitals, Capital Core Unit of Scientific Research and Management of the Top Ten Diseases Treatment, National Youth Civilization Honorary (Neurology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Sports Medicine and Pharmacy). The hospital was also awarded the title of Model Worker's Home by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.

In recent years, the construction of PUTH’s medical institution group has been steadily promoted. As PUTH's first direct branch with relatively complete professional settings, Beijing International Airport campus has explored the implementation of vertical management model. Not only has a smooth transition been achieved, but new breakthroughs have been made through development and construction over the past year. In May 2019, PUTH signed an agreement with China North Industries Group Corporation Limited to run Beijing Northern Hospital of Weaponry Industry. To ensure a smooth handover and to lay a foundation for the following discipline planning and the reasonable resources allocation, PUTH will make full use of the experience of taking over and operating Beijing International Airport Campus. Haidian Hospital Campus and Yanqing Hospital Campus, which are entrusted by the PUTH, seize the opportunity and develop steadily.

In December 2019, on the first anniversary of taking-over of Chongli Hospital, Chongli Campus became one of the first pilot units of national regional medical centers with great development potential. In October 2019, on the first anniversary of the relocation, Yan’an Hospital has became a campus with distinctive features and a brand-new look. Upholding the concept of universal health, PUTH continues to expand the construction of medical consortium. A cooperation intention with Haidian District Health Commission to jointly built Shuguang Community Health Service Center has been reached, and Dongpingli Community Health Service Station in Beijing International Airport Street has been officially unveiled and put into operation. The group development strategy has provided PUTH with valuable space for all disciplines’ development, and also offered unprecedented opportunities to the rational layout of the hospital in the future.

As a patient-centric hospital, PUTH never cease to innovate and keep striving to build a hospital that satisfies patients’ demand. We attaches great importance to humanistic care and healthcare service to the elderly. Since 2019, PUTH has fully implemented the application of electronic medical card and outpatient appointment system. We actively implements medical reform requirements raised by government and strives for progress in all tasks. In recent years, the level and refinement of hospital management has been remarkably improved. PUTH has participated in a number of national-level major projects and research, and the achievements were adopted by the relevant government departments. PUTH has played the role of a national-level hospital in the aspects of clinical pathway (CP) implementation program, Care Service Excellence Project, Counterpart Support organized by government, Medical Partnership Construction Program, and assistance to Tibet and Xinjiang.

At the same time, PUTH has also undertaken medical security work for major national events and medical rescue tasks for major emergencies. PUTH adheres to the precise assistance strategy, which reflects its social responsibility. In 2019, PUTH had successfully completed various medical security tasks such as China’s 70th anniversary celebration, the Beijing World Horticultural Exposition and the second "Belt and Road" International Cooperation Summit Forum. It has successively dispatched teams of experts to provide medical assistance to the Linfen landslide in Shanxi, the Yibin earthquake in Sichuan, and the massive car accident in Bengbu, Anhui, which has been unanimously affirmed and approved by authorities at all levels.

In the decisive stage of completing building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way and ending the "13th Five-Year Plan", we will further strengthen leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) under the strategic goal of "building a world-class university affiliated hospital". With normalization of pandemic prevention and control, PUTH will implement a management system of modern hospital and meet requirements for the pilot work of national regional medical centers. On the premise of doing a good job in pandemic prevention and control, PUTH will actively and effectively promote the resumption of daily work. Taking "building a research hospital" as the starting point, PUTH will promote the innovation of medical science and technology, improve discipline construction as well as personnel training mechanism. Moreover, PUTH will continue exploring new models and methods of group management to ensure the sustainable development of the hospital, and through which, to better contribute to the implementation of Healthy China Action.
